The Thames

Tamisis, Old Father Thames, The Isis. The river has had many names through its years as the life blood of human habitation on its banks. While evidence of people living along the Thames dates back into pre-history, the settlement that would become London was begun by the Romans (and then rebuilt by them after Boudicca sacked the newborn city). The Thames in these years is still a vital part of city life, the docks keep goods flowing in and out of the country and are a constant buzz of activity. Unfortunately the river is also a teeming mess of raw sewage and chemical run-off from the gasworks. While new sewers are being built the task is slow and the load on the ancient tunnels is heavy, naturally they are also begun in the more affluent areas of the city - where the lives of those in power will be eased. No one, least of all the ministers, wants a repeat of the Great Stink where Parliament was driven from London by the odor from the Thames in the summer of 1858.

Westminster

The halls of power cluster around the area known as Westminster, once called Thorney Island. The first was the great abbey, said to have been consecrated by St Peter himself at a time when it was little more than a monastery with a small, attached church.
